Restorations and renovations.
Every year, THIS OLD HOUSE® collaborates with a team of industry professionals and leading home-improvement brands to build a breathtaking “Idea House.” Sweenor Builders was honored to partner with Union Studio Architecture and Community Design and Denise Enright Interior Design for the 2017 Idea House in South Kingstown, Rhode Island.
The Beach House at East Matunuck is chock-full of solutions to address what today’s homeowners look for in a home and coastal living. It combines traditional New England architectural features with modern building techniques to create a high-quality home with relaxed sensibility.
In a fourth collaboration with This Old House®, Sweenor Builders managed the significant renovation of this 1949 classic shingled ranch home in Westerly, Rhode Island. The 2,000-square-foot structure was transformed into a Dutch Colonial with a second floor and 1,000 square feet of additional space, plus plenty of modern amenities to meet the needs of a young family. Our design called for a slight bump out in the back of the house to increase the size of the kitchen and dining room, and to open the floor plan. A new master suite, two children’s bedrooms, a guest bedroom, home office and laundry room were also added. The project was chronicled on the 2019/20 season of This Old House on PBS.
Located on the southern coast of Rhode Island, Potter’s Pond is one of nine coastal lagoons referred to as “salt ponds” by locals. Sweenor Builders renovated this special private waterfront estate to improve views, streamline rooflines, introduce a cupola and stone chimney, and modernize windows, building and mechanical systems. The new design reimagines floorplans to create flexible one-floor living, giving new homeowners the option to age-in-place and the ability to take advantage of operating cost efficiencies during quieter winter months. The home’s flexible layout also makes it a breeze to extend to the second floor, and welcome multiple generations for holidays or summer fun.
Sweenor Builders is managing this significant historic preservation in the heart of Narragansett Pier. The focus of our project is a Queen Anne Victorian home built in 1887. More than a century later, and after having been abandoned for a few years, the home sat prominently along one of Narragansett’s main thoroughfares in severely poor condition. Thanks to new homeowners opting to preserve the structure, we are working within Narragansett Historic District Commission guidelines to recapture as much of the home’s historic architecture and charm as possible. The story of our sweeping restoration will be chronicled on the 2020/2021 season of This Old House TV.
Sweenor Builders was proud to support our architect and partner from the This Old House® Idea House project on his quest to turn a 100-year-old Jamestown-village bungalow into an environmentally conscious clean air, net-zero home for his family. This Old House chronicled our journey as we doubled the home’s footprint with a 1,000-square-foot addition, resolved asbestos and environmental issues, overhauled mechanical systems, incorporated sustainable building products and technologies, and restored the charm that had been lost after two mid-century renovations. The project was distinguished with a platinum Best In American Living™ Award (BALA) by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).
In collaboration with Coutre Design Associates and Taste Design, Sweenor Builders is honored to have had the task of updating this historic gem in Narragansett’s prestigious Ocean Road neighborhood. Designed by famed architectural firm McKim, Mead & White and built in 1884, ‘Stone Lea’ is designated on the National Registry of Historic Places. Collectively, our teams focused on introducing modern interiors and building systems to responsibly and appropriately fit this special landmark.
Even a big, old horse barn can become an unforgettable space. This property came with a 2,300 square-foot wooden barn, large enough for eight horses. The new homeowners had no horses, but they appreciated the unique character of the structure and imagined it could have a new life as an entertainment venue for friends and family. The lofted ceilings and heavy wooden framing provided a giant canvas for our design team, and a special challenge for our building crew. The barn vibe was maintained with extensive use of reclaimed, vintage beams and planks – like those found in the original New England mills. Lots of fun, social elements were added, like a custom state-of-the-art bar, a traditional stone fireplace, concrete floors, oversized rolling doors, and an outdoor kitchen space. Modern comforts were incorporated within the rustic theme, including radiant floor heating, bathroom, and spray foam insulation. If you have property with an offbeat secondary building, it may be a gem waiting to be discovered.
